Description
The common snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, is the quintessential winter flower, emerging in January and lasting into March, they are the first sign that spring is coming. Their dark green stems and arching leaves will push up into the light, even through frozen ground or snow, carrying delicately fragrant, nodding pure white single flowers with central petals tipped with a splash of green. They are absolutely beautiful and such a welcome sight. Snowdrops like to grow in shady areas and look wonderful growing beneath trees and shrubs where they thrive on in the dappled light. They look delightful planted in groups in borders or in drifts across a lawn for a naturalistic look. They’re also lovely growing in pots, as long as they don’t dry out, as all snowdrops need moist soil. The bulbs will naturalise quicky, growing into large clumps that should be divided every few years. Just dig them up after flowering, but when they still have green leaves, split into smaller clumps and replant. You’ll soon have an ever-growing colony of these exquisite little flowers! Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, Galanthus nivalis is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. Supplied as 30 bulbs, size 5/6, ready to plant in autumn, growing to a height and spread of 10 cm (4 in).
